5.0 out of 5 stars The Mic I've Been Looking For, December 16, 2009
This review is from: Rode NT1A Anniversary Vocal Condenser Microphone Package (Electronics)
I'm a musician who is starting to move more into a producer role as well, and I needed a good vocal mic for the studio. Previously I was doing all of my vocals with a Shure SM57, which is a great mic but it is very directional and necessitates a lot of preamping, which tended to make it pretty noisy for picking up softer vocals.

I'd heard a lot of positive hype about the NT1A and claims of it being the "quietest mic in the market". I was very much surprised by the low-cost and comparisons to microphones in a much higher price range, so I picked one up figuring that if it didn't live up to the claims, I'd return it and buy a more expensive mic.

I didn't return it. And I don't ever see myself selling it either.

Quite simply, this mic is amazing. I plugged it in direct to Roland 24-track digital workstation and cranked the gain all the way to 10. Not even a touch of hiss. This never happened with my SM57, and I always attributed the hiss to... Read more

This microphone exceeded my expectations. It sounds warm, clear, and crisp. For only $229, you can't possibly beat it. This microphone can compete well with microphones at a much higher price range. Ever since I got this mic, my hip hop vocals have skyrocketed in quality, because now the vocal quality is professional sounding. I don't even have to add EQ to the vocals I record with this bad boy (unless I was trying to make it sound a very specific way, but normally adding EQ to the vocals from this mic would be like selling yourself short...), all I need to do is add compression and a reverb, and it sounds really good. I tried rapping into this mic without the pop filter, and surprisingly, the plosives didn't show up as much as I thought they would. It will happen, no doubt, but I was just surprised at how much harder it is to get them to show up. You can scream into this mic, you can speak very softly, you can make your voice sound any way you wish, and it will pick it up pretty much... Read more

I have been recording on a Tascam 2488 Neo since winter and was feeling frustrated because I still wasn't getting studio quality recording from my acoustic guitars when I mic'd them. Well, this microphone changed that. I now, with the mixing of this condenser mic and an Sm57, an incredible sound by allowing the 57 to pick up the low end tones and the NT1-A to sweep up all the higher ones. I couldn't have asked for better at a more reasonable price!

Make no mistake, this microphone is not going to compare to a U47 or a 414, but, for the price, it gets five stars! First, the packaging is quiet secure. You get the microphone inside a hard case, inside a retail box, inside the Amazon box with expected package insulation materials. Next, the overall construction of the microphone is very sturdy. For the price, I was expecting a cheap plastic "toy" like feel and that's not what you get. This thing has some girth behind it and it's not something you'd want to smack the drummer with because it might actually hurt!

I ordered this as a distant room/ambiance microphone and it's really good for that. You get clear sound, almost no noise and a very wide response range. I've also used it for a guitar and it sounds good and vocals are very clear. Although, if you are using it for vocals, use a 57 as well so you get the bottom end!

That's the only drawback is that down in the real low end, say less than 200Hz,... Read more

I use this for voice over recording. The tonal quality is warm and pleasing while rejecting quite a bit of background noise from nearby computer fans. Solid build quality. It looks and sounds like a much more expensive mike. Only when you get into mikes costing four times as much do you begin to get better sound quality, and even then, it's subjective and not a drastic difference. You simply can't find anything else even close to the sound and build quality of this mike for 100 dollars.

Customer Video Review Length:: 4:28 Mins

This is my video review of the AT2020 USB microphone from Audio-Technica. USB Microphones are made to be plugged in directly to a laptop or desktop. I connected this to a Vista 64 laptop during filming and did the voice over on a Macbook Pro.

Text review:
I give this product a 5 star rating. It is easy to use, high quality and very competitively priced. This is a great desktop mic to use for making podcasts or recording music.

I am not a musician so I am not able to speak to that aspect of the microphones ability. I did use it to make several voice over videos and it performed perfectly. Never a hick-up or any spurious noises heard at all.

I did not include specs into my video review because it would add to the file size and be too small to read here on Amazon's video player.

Regular readers of my reviews know I try to supply specs when necessary.

Here are the specs:

I was looking for the pre Amp for my microphone to do do voice over video and found this USB microphone from Audio technica. So I did not have to buy the preamp . Just plug it to the USB port then you go. It was very easy to use and noise floor very quiet, it does not record the fan noise from your computer or the background noise in the recording room, very happy with the purchase.

This review is from: Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Condenser USB Microphone (Electronics)
I've had this condenser microphone for about a month now and it has suited my purposes very well. I needed something to record podcasts with and do some voiceover work as well. I do my recording with Audacity, and the microphone was imediately recognized and easily installed as my primary microphone for Audacity. It is a very sensitive mic, and I had to build a small "porta-booth" ([...])to reduce the echo in the room where I record, but was able to get good clear recording after that. I recomend using a pop filter with this microphone to help reduce "S" & "P" sybillance. All in all, a very good microphone for the price.
